Tomáš has used Character.AI for two years. He has a fantasy campaign with a sarcastic elf ranger, a running joke with a pirate captain and a philosophy bot he argues with on the train. Lately he keeps hitting the same walls: ads in free chats, the ranger forgetting the plot, and the philosophy bot agreeing with whatever he says. He's not looking for a different hobby. He's looking for the same hobby, done better.
If that sounds familiar, this comparison is for you. We make Debatly, so we'll be upfront about bias and equally upfront about where Character.AI is the better choice. Character.AI details were checked in October 2026 and may change.
The short version
- Choose Character.AI if you want a huge library of community characters, voice calls, a free tier and casual roleplay without much structure.
- Choose Debatly if you want characters on the strongest models (GPT-6, Claude, Gemini), group rooms where characters actually react to each other, scenarios with goals, debates with a judge's verdict, and no ads.
Plenty of people use both: Character.AI for drifting around a fandom, Debatly when they want a conversation with more brains or a clear outcome.

Where Character.AI wins
Sheer variety. Character.AI's library is enormous. Whatever obscure anime side character or video game villain you're thinking of, someone has probably made it. Debatly has a curated set of a few dozen characters (historical figures, coaches, experts and personas) plus whatever you build yourself. If browsing is half the fun for you, Character.AI is hard to beat.
It's free to start. You can use Character.AI without paying, with ads and limits. Its cheapest paid plan is $4.99 a month. Debatly has no free plan, so you need to want the extra quality enough to pay for it.
Voice. Character.AI offers voice calls with characters. Debatly is text first.
Casual roleplay culture. Character.AI is built around endless, open-ended scenes that never need to go anywhere. That's a feature, not a bug, if that's what you enjoy.
Where Debatly wins
Smarter characters on models you pick
Character.AI uses its own models. Debatly characters run on the frontier models you already know from ChatGPT and Claude: GPT-6, Claude Sonnet 5, Gemini and Grok on every plan, Claude Opus 5.5 on Pro, and GPT-6 Astra and Claude Fable 5.1 on Max.
In practice this shows up in long, complex conversations. A character who has to track a plot with five factions, explain Stoic philosophy accurately or catch a contradiction in your argument benefits from a stronger model. If you don't like how one model plays a character, switch and compare.
Characters that argue with each other
Most group chats are really several one on one chats in the same window: each bot answers you in turn. In a Debatly group room, an AI director decides who should speak next, and characters reply to each other as well as to you. You can let the room run on its own for a few turns and just watch.
Put Napoleon, Gandhi and The Negotiator in one room and ask how to win without fighting. They don't take polite turns. They pick each other's arguments apart.
Conversations that end somewhere
This is the biggest difference. Character.AI conversations usually have no destination. Debatly adds two things that do:
- Scenarios with objectives. A salary negotiation where the manager has a frozen budget, a job interview with a skeptical hiring lead, a 1920s murder mystery. The character pursues its own goals, so the scene has stakes.
- Debates with a verdict. Ask a question, and several AIs argue it from different sides over several rounds. Judge Alex weighs the arguments and delivers a verdict with reasoning. Six formats cover different jobs: Panel, For vs Against, Model vs Model, Devil's Advocate, Socratic and Pitch Defense.
Remember Tomáš's philosophy bot that agreed with everything? Here's what happens when agreeing isn't allowed:
Characters that disagree with you
Chatbots trained to be helpful have a pull toward agreeing with you, a problem researchers call sycophancy (we explain it in why AI always agrees with you). Debatly has characters whose whole job is to push back: Petra, the devil's advocate, and The Tough Love Coach won't flatter you.
No ads, and it speaks your language
Debatly is paid, so there are no ads mid-scene and no slow mode. Characters reply in whatever language you write in, which makes it useful for language practice too.
What about memory?
Both apps have memory, built differently. Character.AI uses memory pins (you pin key messages) and offers fuller memory on c.ai+. Debatly has personal memory that stores facts about you across conversations: 100 facts on Starter, 1,000 on Pro and 10,000 on Max. Characters themselves can also recall earlier conversations when memory is on.
Neither is perfect. Long stories in any app eventually exceed what the model can hold at once, so for big campaigns it helps to keep a short summary of the plot and paste it in when you start a new session.
Building your own characters
Both apps let you create characters. Character.AI's creator is quick and casual. Debatly's character builder asks for more: identity, background, goals, personality, speaking style, rules and a greeting. It takes a few minutes longer, but those fields are what keep a character from drifting back into a generic assistant voice after 50 messages. You can keep characters private, share them by link or submit them to Explore. Starter includes 5 custom characters, Pro 25 and Max unlimited.
Then put your character to work. Any character can join a group room or sit on a debate panel:
Safety and age
Character.AI removed open-ended chat for users under 18 in late 2025 and now uses age estimation and selfie checks; teens get guided formats such as Stories instead. Debatly is a paid product for adults, built for discussion, learning and roleplay rather than explicit content, and its expert characters (doctors, lawyers, therapists) are clearly AI personas, not a substitute for a professional.
How to decide in one evening
Pick one thing you do on Character.AI and try it in Debatly the same evening:
- If you chat with one favorite character, rebuild it in the builder with its rules and speaking style, then have the same conversation in both apps and compare.
- If you run group scenes, put three characters in a group room, stay quiet for two turns and watch whether they react to each other.
- If you argue with philosophy or history bots, run the question as a debate and read the verdict.
If Debatly doesn't feel better for your use, stay with Character.AI with a clear conscience. If it does, you've found the upgrade. Still comparing more options? See our roundup of the best Character.AI alternatives. Plans and limits are on the pricing page.
